WHAT WE DO

While there is a broad range of Arabic language media outlets reporting stories from and about the Middle East, there is currently no affordable and reliable means for English speakers to gain access to this content. As a result, many English speaking businesspersons, students, journalists and others who have an interest in the affairs of the region are largely unaware of what the Middle East media is covering and how they are covering these stories.

Mideastwire.com aims to close this gap by offering a daily menu of translations covering some of the key political, cultural, economic and opinion pieces appearing in the media of the 22 Arab countries and the Arab Diaspora. Through this effort, we hope to address at least one aspect of a global disconnect that continues to threaten a wide spectrum of socio-political and economic relationships, both here in the region and beyond.

It is also important to note that, since our founding in 2005, Mideastwire.com is wholly funded by the content license fees paid by individuals and organizations. As such, there is no government, commercial or non-profit support, an aspect that we believe provides a relatively independent platform for better understanding.

On June 3, the Iraqi Sky Press news website carried the following report from Baghdad: “On Saturday, the Peshmerga Ministry addressed harsh criticisms to the Popular Mobilization-affiliated Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq, against the backdrop of statements issued by its spokesman Jawad at-Telabawi, in which he criticized the Peshmerga forces and President of the Kurdistan Province Massoud Barzani. In a statement received by Sky Press, the Ministry said: “During the last few days, At-Telabawi, the leader in Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq, published a statement in the media using an unwarrantedly hostile tone against the Peshmerga and the Kurdistan Province, and featuring attacks, strife and aggressiveness.” The statement continued that the latter attack was the exact replica of [former Prime Minister and current Vice President Nouri] Al-Maliki’s talk against the people of Kurdistan… (Read More)

Arab Diplomacy - Military and Security
On June 5, the Qatari-owned Al-Quds al-Arabi daily carried the following report by its Amman Office Chief Bassam Bdareen: “The Syrian regime’s sudden cooperation with an old Jordanian request to militarily move in southern Syria emerged to the forefront during the last few hours. However, the timing of that cooperation was “dubious,” while its approach was very distant from the specifications and standards that Amman had been demanding. More importantly, this surprising military response was seen on Saturday morning, without “coordination” or direct consultation in accordance with the rules of border engagement, which slightly confused the Jordanians, but still pushed them to adopt the highest levels of caution and combat readiness to avoid any subsequent security slips and bumps, aftershocks or repercussions… (Read More)

“The Ersal barren areas: ISIL, An-Nusra are committing suicide and Hezbollah is watching”  (Website, Middle East)
Military and Security
On June 4, the electronic Al-Modon daily carried the following report: “The battle that erupted between ISIL on one hand, and the Saraya Ahl al-Sham and the Fatah al-Sham front on the other hand will not be the last one between the two sides especially since the ISIL organization aspires for further expansion towards the Ersal barren areas in its quest for safe zones and supply lines for its elements in light of the pressure against it. According to the assessments and the silent military moves seen at the Ersal barren areas and the surrounding regions, the signs indicate that a battle could erupt at any given moment between the two sides. This is further enhanced by the attack carried out by a group belonging to ISIL on the dawn of Sunday, June 4, against an An-Nusra location at the Al-Ajram area. An-Nusra managed to push the attack back. However, the interesting part this time is that the attack started when an ISIL suicide bomber blew himself up at the location… (Read More)

“A police without weapons: Stronger and more precise”  (Az-Zaman, Iraq)
Terrorism - USA Europe
On June 4, the independent Az-Zaman newspaper carried the following opinion piece by Chief Editor Fateh Abdul Salam: “Yes, the police do not carry weapons in Britain, i.e. in a society that has rejected the culture of violence and weapons decades ago, and has enacted laws that spread social peace and treat everyone equally. So, no matter how much the terrorists perpetrate their crimes using this climate of ample tolerance, equality and public and private liberties, they will fail to change this stable country’s lifestyle. The police’s fast reaction and the killing of the terrorists just 8 minutes after they had launched their attack, proves that the peaceful culture of British society has created strong and highly responsive security bodies, which use weapons when needed and at the right time and place... Today, the terrorists are using the wide door of liberties to get it… (Read More)
