WHAT WE DO

While there is a broad range of Arabic language media outlets reporting stories from and about the Middle East, there is currently no affordable and reliable means for English speakers to gain access to this content. As a result, many English speaking businesspersons, students, journalists and others who have an interest in the affairs of the region are largely unaware of what the Middle East media is covering and how they are covering these stories.

Mideastwire.com aims to close this gap by offering a daily menu of translations covering some of the key political, cultural, economic and opinion pieces appearing in the media of the 22 Arab countries and the Arab Diaspora. Through this effort, we hope to address at least one aspect of a global disconnect that continues to threaten a wide spectrum of socio-political and economic relationships, both here in the region and beyond.

It is also important to note that, since our founding in 2005, Mideastwire.com is wholly funded by the content license fees paid by individuals and organizations. As such, there is no government, commercial or non-profit support, an aspect that we believe provides a relatively independent platform for better understanding.

"Surprises in Nakoura are possible"  (Newspaper, Middle East)
USA Europe
On January 18, the Al-Joumhouria daily newspaper carried the following report by Toni Issa: "A thin thread connects the following three issues: Lebanon signing an agreement with the IMF, it signing an agreement with Israel in Nakoura, and starting to obtain gas from Egypt and electricity from Jordan. Experts believe that none of these three files will move forward on its own. The Lebanese officials are well aware of this fact. For this reason, there is an ongoing silent action in all three directions behind the present noise being made around the budget, the recovery plan, and the USD fluctuations… (Read More)

Financial Markets - Terrorism
On January 18, the Al-Joumhouria daily newspaper carried the following report by Munir al-Rabih: "The discussions in the backstage are still ongoing regarding the reasons behind the Shi'i duo's decision to return to the council of the ministers… The reasons provided by the Shi'i duo, which consist of purely internal reasons, do not indicate that the duo has returned based on an agreement. If this is true, then this means that the disputes within the cabinet sessions will remain… The elements of the dispute and the disruption of the cabinet's work are still there: first, a disagreement over the budget and the USD exchange rate, as well as the negotiations' mechanism with the IMF… (Read More)

“Why has the talk resumed now about an Algerian-Moroccan confrontation?”  (Al-Quds al-Arabi, United Kingdom)
On January 19, the Qatari-owned Al-Quds al-Arabi daily carried the following opinion piece by Tunisian writer Nizar Boulahya: “It is not yet clear what the tour undertook by Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra on Tuesday before last to three Arab capitals will produce, and whether it merely aimed to “engage in expanded consultations with the Arab states to determine the date of the summit that will be hosted by Algeria,” as he had announced. Likewise, it is not certain whether UN Envoy to the Sahara Staffan de Mistura, who visited the Maghreb region on Wednesday, will ensure some progress that allows the activation of the Sahrawi murky water. However, the fact that an Israeli paper recalled the talk about a potential Algerian-Moroccan confrontation in parallel to the two visits was somewhat suspicious… (Read More)

"Will the meeting in Algeria succeed?"  (Filastin al-An, Palestine)
Arab Diplomacy - Peace Process
On January 16, the Hamas-affiliated Filastin al-Aan daily carried the following piece by Youssef Razka: "Algeria has stepped into the line of the Palestinian reconciliation after Egypt. The Algerian president decided to call on the Palestinian factions to attend a special meeting in the Algerian capital to discuss the internal Palestinian files. By the end of this month, all the five participating delegations will arrive (Fatah, Hamas, the Jihad, the Popular Front, and the Democratic Front). The reconciliation is the most important file, in addition to the file of the elections followed by the file of reforming the PLO. There is nothing new at the level of these issues that were repeatedly discussed by the delegations in Egypt and where, unfortunately, no agreements were reached. All the meetings did not yield even the smallest of achievements!… (Read More)

Military and Security
On January 19, the Saudi-owned London-based Asharq al-Awsat newspaper carried the following report by Saudi writer Moshari ath-Thaidi: “The targeting of the Emirati capital Abu Dhabi with booby-trapped drones, and the killing of three civilians and injuring of others, is a major and dangerous Houthi-Iranian escalation. This is the first time that the United Arab Emirates is targeted that way, which points to the Iranian disgruntlement towards the influential Emirati role in fighting the Iranian project in Yemen in the context of the Coalition forces led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia… The results of this attack vary between the domestic, regional, and international scenes. And the first of its messages is addressed to the administration of American President Biden, who rushed to remove the name of the Houthi militias from the list of terrorist groups without any justification… (Read More)

Human Rights - Media
On January 19, the Qatari-owned Al-Quds al-Arabi daily carried the following opinion piece by Syrian journalist Riyad Mu’as’as: “There is no doubt that by sentencing the former intelligence officer of the Syrian regime Anwar Raslan, Germany secured a global position when it comes to international justice that which will be remembered by the judicial and legal history, as well as a precedent that will be capitalized on and a model that will be followed in the trials of war criminals and criminals against humanity in future places and times… What is odd, however, is that while Raslan’s sentencing was welcomed by all human rights organizations, it was not tackled by the Syrian National Coalition, which should state its position towards this important Syrian and international development, and congratulate the Syrian people on the sentencing of one of their executioners… (Read More)

No one before and no one after will ever obtain this kind of love and appreciation and support from the whole world including the east, west, north, and south. Several months ago, the Emiratis turned to Iran to sign some side-understandings pertaining to a number of files including Yemen. The Abu Dhabi leaders state that their relationship with Mohammad Bin Salman doesn’t allow for a direct confrontation with the man.
