WHAT WE DO

While there is a broad range of Arabic language media outlets reporting stories from and about the Middle East, there is currently no affordable and reliable means for English speakers to gain access to this content. As a result, many English speaking businesspersons, students, journalists and others who have an interest in the affairs of the region are largely unaware of what the Middle East media is covering and how they are covering these stories.

Mideastwire.com aims to close this gap by offering a daily menu of translations covering some of the key political, cultural, economic and opinion pieces appearing in the media of the 22 Arab countries and the Arab Diaspora. Through this effort, we hope to address at least one aspect of a global disconnect that continues to threaten a wide spectrum of socio-political and economic relationships, both here in the region and beyond.

It is also important to note that, since our founding in 2005, Mideastwire.com is wholly funded by the content license fees paid by individuals and organizations. As such, there is no government, commercial or non-profit support, an aspect that we believe provides a relatively independent platform for better understanding.

“Al-Baldawi: US violations in Iraq, a message to whoever stands with Palestinian people”  (Website, Middle East)
USA Europe
On December 6, the Iraqi Al-Maalomah website carried the following report from Baghdad: “Deputy Muhammad Al-Baldawi from the Sadikun bloc assured that the American violations against Popular Mobilization in Iraq were messages which Washington was trying to deliver to anyone standing alongside the Palestinian people. Speaking to Al-Maalomah, Al-Baldawi assured that “the national discourse of all the powers, as well as the government, confirms the rejection of all foreign actions and presence on Iraqi soil, as well as the practices of the US troops inside Iraq.” He continued: “The practices and crimes committed by America in Iraq are a mere attempt to cover up the violations being perpetrated by the Zionist entity in the occupied territories against the Palestinian people,” indicating that “Iraq is leading the states that announced their rejection of the Zionist entity’s practices against the Palestinians… (Read More)

““One from Hamas for every two civilians”, the latest lie of the war criminals!”  (Akhbar al-Yawm, Egypt)
Human Rights - Military and Security
On December 5, the Egyptian Akhbar al-Yawm newspaper carried the following opinion piece by Galal Aref: “Israel, along with the United States, thought that the one-week truce in Gaza will be enough for the world to forget the scene of mass extermination targeting the people of Palestine… But Israel itself renewed that scene in all its details and in a more horrific way by resuming the massacre and trying to repeat what it did in North Gaza in the southern regions, to force the Palestinian civilians to flee toward the border with Egypt… And despite the rising warning tone of the “advice” given by American officials in public about the need to avoid raising the number of “victims” from among the Palestinian civilians, the American administration is still supporting the continuation of the Israeli annihilation war, which is no longer acceptable for most of America’s allies, even the majority of the American people themselves… (Read More)

On December 7, the London-based Al-Arab daily newspaper carried the following report: “The Islamic forces in Kuwait are speeding up their steps to take advantage of the unprecedented state of confusion in the Ministry of Education to push the highest possible number of demands pertaining to the educational process, which these forces view as a main gate to Islamize society… MP Mohammad Hayef al-Matiri, who leads the Salafist Thawabet al-Umma rally, asked the Minister of Education and Higher Education, Adel al-Maneh, to inform him about the measures taken by his ministry to match the students’ dress coder with the Islamic values… (Read More)

“The Israeli dream: An American-Iranian confrontation”  (Al-Quds al-Arabi, United Kingdom)
Military and Security - USA Europe
On December 7, the Qatari-owned London-based Al-Quds al-Arabi daily carried the following opinion piece by Palestinian writer Suheil Kiwan: “A cargo ship believed to belong to Israelis was attacked by the Yemeni Houthis, noting it was the fourth attack of its kind, in addition to the ones staged using drones in Eilat, which is fueling the tensions between America and Iran. In the meantime, one of the most beautiful dreams of Israel’s leaders is to see the eruption of an American-Iranian military confrontation. Indeed, this is the dream of the political, military, and popular command, as everyone believes that Iran is starting to pose a threat through its arms in the region, at the head of which is Hezbollah, through its armament, training, and support of the Islamic resistance in the Gaza Strip, and more recently, through the implication of the Yemeni Houthis in the war… (Read More)

On December 7, the Al-Akhbar daily newspaper carried the following report: “The protests stirred by the proposal made by French President, Emanuel Macron, after the Al-Aqsa Flood operation on forming an international alliance to combat the Hamas Movement similar to the alliance against ISIL, did not convince him of dropping the idea. Macron is planning on proceeding with his project… Al-Akhbar learned from special sources that Macron asked a team at the French foreign ministry to prepare “practical proposals” to list Hamas and the rest of the Palestinian Resistance factions including the leaders and cadres on the “terror” lists… (Read More)

“Gaza: “Singapore” or graveyard of the East?!”  (Okaz, Saudi Arabia)
On December 7, the pro-monarchy Okaz newspaper carried the following opinion piece by Mohammad as-Saaed: “The massive network of tunnels built by Hamas underneath Gaza took twice as much effort and money as it would have taken to invest aboveground, as can be confirmed by any construction expert. Had these funds been directed toward civilian industries and education, they would have turned Gaza into another Singapore, especially since the size of the aid offered to Gaza and the services sponsored by states and international organizations are massive and could have secured a prominent position for it in the Mediterranean basin. But this is the last thing on the mind of Hamas or any other armed Islamic organization. Hence, Hamas chose to build a military city underground instead of a modern city aboveground… (Read More)

“Sudan under the threat of partitioning…”  (Newspaper, Middle East)
Military and Security
On December 6, the London-based Al-Arab daily newspaper carried the following report: “The failure to make any progress in the talks held in the Saudi city of Jeddah undermined the hopes in reaching a settlement for the conflict that caused the displacement of more than 6.5 million people within and outside Sudan, in addition to destroying the economy and causing ethnic massacres in Darfur. Currently, the ghost of partitioning is pointing in the horizon. The situation in Sudan is heading in the direction of more complex outcomes as a result of the armed conflict seen in the country for around eight months now, amidst fears of a new separation scenario now that the talks that were mediated by Saudi Arabia and America have collapsed, causing the two conflicting parties to proceed with the fighting that caused a major humanitarian crisis… (Read More)

The SDF – which is primarily formed by the Kurdish People Protection Units – is suffering an attrition war on several fronts that has affected its main military leaders recently. In parallel to the Turkish attacks that have been recently focusing on the SDF’s leadership structure, the SDF is dealing with a rebellion in the Der az-Zor governorate in Eastern Syria, led by Arab tribes that have grown weary with what they view as the process of marginalization against them… (Read More)
“Is the Emirates seeking to distance Iranian militias from occupied Syrian Golan?”  (Website, Middle East)
Military and Security
On December 6, the Egyptian Arabi 21 news site carried the following report by its correspondent Yaman Nehme: “Sources close to the Russian Foreign Ministry denied to Arabi 21 the reports surrounding multisided talks being held by the Emirates to distance the Iranian militias from the separation line in the occupied Syrian Golan, thus neutralizing the Syrian front in the war being waged by the Israeli occupation on Gaza. The opposition “Syria TV” had quoted diplomatic sources it did not name as saying that the talks aimed to go back to the clauses of the “settlement agreement” sponsored by Russia in the summer of 2018 between the opposition factions in South Syria and the Syrian regime. The latter agreement stipulates that the Iranian militias be distanced from the Golan border by 85 kilometers, based on the Russian guarantees… (Read More)

“The Israeli aggression on Gaza and the Turkish Zionists”  (Website, Middle East)
On December 6, the Egyptian Arabi 21 news site carried the following opinion piece by Ismail Yasa: “Turkey, as a government and people, has been supporting the Palestinians who have been subjected to a brutal Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip since October 7, at a time when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the Hamas Movement was not a terrorist organization but rather a national movement fighting to liberate the Palestinian territories from occupation. However, Turks who are loyal to the opposition do not support that position. Indeed, some of them are saying that Israel is defending itself, while others believe that what is happening in the Gaza Strip does not concern them and is a problem between the Israelis and Palestinians. At this level, Leader of the Republican People's Party Ozgur Ozel described the Hamas Movement as a “terrorist organization… (Read More)
